Why the IDD community deserves a real app – not a shortcut
The PWA we built was a great starting point. But housing is one of the most critical, highest-stakes decisions people with intellectual and developmental disabilities will ever make. The technology supporting that journey needs to be as reliable, accessible, and trustworthy as On My Own itself.
Push Notifications That Actually Work
Connection requests, new matches, and chat messages are time-sensitive. The PWA offered no push notifications on iOS and inconsistent behavior on Android. The native app delivers instant, reliable alerts on both platforms — so no opportunity slips away silently.
Accessibility Built In – Not Bolted On
The IDD community relies heavily on VoiceOver, TalkBack, and system-level accessibility tools. Native React Native apps integrate directly with Apple’s VoiceOver and Android’s TalkBack, providing a consistent, tested experience that browser-based apps simply cannot match.
A Dedicated Home on the Phone
The PWA lived inside a browser tab – easy to lose, easy to forget. A native app icon on the home screen means OOMM Life is always one tap away, familiar, and permanent. For users who may need guidance navigating technology, this is a meaningful difference.
Institutional Credibility
Regional centers, partner agencies, and families evaluating roommate matching services see a dedicated app as a sign of serious, long-term commitment. The PWA appeared as a website shortcut. The native app signals that OOMM Life is infrastructure – not an experiment.

Being listed on the Apple App Store and Google Play signals legitimacy to clients, families, and regional center partners. It also enables referral staff to share a single, verified link – no more “add to home screen” instructions that confuse first-time users.
Offline Access to Core Content
Connectivity isn’t guaranteed everywhere On My Own serves. The native app keeps core content available without an internet connection – so users can review their profile, saved matches, and agency resources even when offline.
Face ID & Biometric Security
Housing profiles contain sensitive personal information. Native apps support Face ID and fingerprint authentication natively – reducing friction for users who find complex passwords challenging, while keeping their data protected.
