Technology is becoming more and more integral in the business world. It has helped companies cut costs, boost profits, find new markets, improve their SEO rankings on Google and keep on top of evolving customer expectations. What is not to love?

However, while some tech trends are more obvious than others (e.g., Social media marketing), some companies still don’t fully understand how to leverage technology to maximize their profitability – or worse still – they are fighting technology altogether. And as such, they are some businesses today that continue to suffer from issues surrounding the cloud.

However, for the companies who have aced their cloud computing game or just getting started with the cloud, Google has become the go-to company. In recent years, Google has been an increasingly popular choice for companies of all shapes and sizes looking to compete with competitors. From social networks to retail stores, there are few industries Google doesn’t play a major role in.

Starting with an introduction on what Google Cloud Computing is and why it’s so important, this article will cover the top brands that have found success and are evolving with Google Cloud computing. Learn how companies like Twitter, Paypal, and Etsy, Pizza Hut are using Google Cloud to drive their success!

What is Google Cloud Computing

Google cloud is a form of computing that is generally for the software-as-a-service business model. It’s based on the idea that your data can be stored on servers not in your building or even in the same city. One of the advantages of this type of computing is that you can access your information from anywhere using an internet connection while also accessing it via different devices.

Market Share and Few Benefits

Google Cloud has been expanding quickly over the past few years. Per the latest survey that was conducted, Google Cloud’s market share is around eight percent, which is steadily growing.

Few benefits of Google Cloud are:

  •     It’s a powerful, cost-effective resource.
  •     Google Cloud’s APIs and tools let you focus on your business logic rather than on managing servers. If an application needs to be scaled up or down, Google
will automatically take care of it for you.
  •     All the data is stored in a secure environment and at lightning-fast speed.
  •     Even if there is a failure in one part of the system, everything else remains operational.
  •     The platform is robust, with 99.9% uptime guarantees.

Now, let’s jump directly to the brands who have leveraged Google Cloud for successful conversions.

Top Brands Case Studies

Here are the few top brands that have gained huge success through Google Cloud.

Twitter

Twitter is always looking for ways to improve engagement because hey, who doesn’t want more engagement?? And they’ve found their answer in Google Cloud which they have been using to achieve higher speed while increasing the scalability of their services. The platform lets them manage their analytics better so that they can gather data from multiple sources across all of the different channels they are utilizing. By doing so, the product team is able to see how well their content is resonating with users and what kinds of adjustments could be made to better serve them in the future. This allows Twitter to make data-driven decisions for making changes; it gives them the power to connect even more with their audience.

Twitter switched to Google Cloud in 2018. In the iteration, Google Cloud helped Twitter avoid transferring the aggregate business logic and the storage simultaneously, lowering the overall migration risk. Following the implementation of the new serving system, the Twitter team began redesigning the rest of the data analytics pipeline in 2019 using Google Cloud technology. The redesign aimed to address several current issues, duplication of logic between systems, and costly maintenance of real-time layers.

The company uses Google BigQuery for ad hoc analysis of traffic patterns, revenues, and search terms. Its engineering team is able to identify popular regions where they should make more servers available.

Paypal

‘’PayPal was able to process 1,000 payments per second during peak traffic periods, such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday.’’

As part of its strategy, PayPal wants to build a practical platform that can handle various traffic types. This will enable them to build expectations on demand as needed rather than planning for it in advance. Since moving to the cloud, this has been one of the most significant cost saving strategies employed by PayPal. Before making the move, they had to configure their own servers with capacity in order to have enough hardware available when needed for rare high-traffic periods during the holidays. Now PayPal runs across Google Cloud which allows them to access servers on-demand whenever they are running short on hardware or need increased performance during high-traffic moments.

The Home Depot

The Home Depot is a major U.S.-based home improvement supplies chain that sees over 12 million customers per week across its 2,200+ stores in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Committed to providing a “one-stop shopping” experience for customers, they’ve invested heavily in technology to deliver an online retail operation that mirrors their physical product selection and offerings, including the ability for shoppers to either pick up items at their local store or have them delivered to their homes.

The Home Depot partnered with Google to use its industry-leading cloud technology. Today, the Home Depot uses Google Cloud to power a new SAP implementation of their Customer Asset Repository, General Ledgers, and Business Objects. By using Google’s big data analysis tools such as BigQuery, the Home Depot is able to generate reports and perform supply chain analytics. As a result, it estimates supplier lead times that influence forecasting of their product releases.

They have extended their multiyear cloud partnership to help the store keep up with technological advancements and provide customers better shopping experiences by combining physical and computerized circumstances.

Etsy

Popular online marketplace Etsy recently completed a two-year migration from 2,000 on-premises servers to Google Cloud. Continuing with the trend of more and more major brands adopting the cloud, Etsy has been investing in cloud infrastructure software from Google in order to build out its main website and mobile app. The Brooklyn-based company’s platform is home to over 34 million unique product listings from more than two million sellers ranging from crafters who sell their handmade goods, to big brands that have an Etsy shop just as a secondary source of income.

With the help of AI and other machine learning tools, Etsy’s engineers and data scientists strengthened their experimentation capabilities. The transition to Google Cloud enabled a drastic reduction to Etsy’s carbon footprint by providing 60% annual savings in both computing power and infrastructure cost. This eco-friendly initiative helped Etsy optimize computer costs by 42% while improving the predictability of resources going forward. With these improvements, Etsy is pushing forward its green company attitude as the global marketplace continues to dedicate its efforts into bettering their team’s community.

American Cancer society

Breast Cancer is one of the most often studied types of malignant growths, and it is also the leading cause of mortality from illness. Although there are several breast cancer subtypes with hopeless anticipation, these subtypes are little understood. In addition, high-resolution tissue images are challenging to study because of their uncompressed, exclusive structure.

To identify patterns in digital pathology images of breast cancer samples, the American Cancer Society used image analysis on GCP to increase timeliness and accuracy. They did so by using Google Cloud ML Engine, a fully managed service that enables scalable and reliable training and inference of machine learning models — while protecting valuable tissue samples — with an API for natural language processing and other capabilities.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is an online educational platform founded in 2006 by educator Sal Khan. The site contains over 3,400 videos covering a wide range of topics from math to science to personal finance. Structured as short lessons in a series format, the content is available on the website and via YouTube. The site features practice problems, instant feedback, and responsive skill tracking that adjusts based on how a student works through a topic.

Khan Academy chose App Engine as its hosting and application development platform because App Engine could easily house its growing collection of 2,000-plus videos, resolving the organization’s overall server and maintenance issues with a single solution.

As a result of using App Engine, the team focused on the client experience and content diversity that make the foundation such a force to be reckoned with google cloud computing. Almost all of their flexibility and traffic issues are banked on Google App Engine, where the application resides. It’s also easy for the development team to keep track of site performance using the App Engine dashboard’s statistics on response time, uptime, and errors.

Pizza Hut

Ordering your favorite food is even more streamlined than before. The first obvious reason for this is because of all the new technology that has been implemented into the system. According to NPD, now 53% of all restaurant delivery orders are made digitally, up from 33% in 2013. As a result, Pizza Hut is enabling its customers to order their favorite menu items via the company’s website or mobile app, as well as Facebook and Twitter chatbots.

Pizza Hut’s eCommerce operations heavily relied on a traditional data center infrastructure which was getting harder to work with. More concerning, the company had to scale every time they received an influx of orders or users. Fortunately, Pizza Hut quickly locked in on the most cost-efficient option available: the public cloud. By leveraging cloud containers for microservices and containers, Pizza Hut can react more quickly to its customers’ needs while staying ahead of their competitors with new services that would’ve taken much longer to develop by relying solely on bare-metal servers. Furthermore, easy access to up-to-date APIs will allow users to more easily customize their apps through the use of Pizza Hut API access points. For example, third-party companies can easily add new features without having to reinvent the wheel once they have gained this API access via Pizza Hut APIs.
